What is Cross Country?

Cross Country running is an important part of Little Athletics. It is our winter season activity for those who like the longer distances and enjoy a different style of competition. It can be beneficial in building strength and stamina for other sports and activities as well as the track & field season.

When is it competition?

Weekly competition is held on Saturday mornings from early May to July, regardless of the weather! Please refer to our 2016 Program

Where is it conducted?

As well as competition being held adjacent to the Altona track on Sugargum Drive, Altona, we also hold joint meetings with other local little athletic clubs at various locations. Please refer to our 2016 Program

Who can compete?

Under the rules of Little Athletics Victoria children must be at least five (5) years of age to register. The maximum age to compete is sixteen (16) years of age.

What events are offered?

Events offered are dependent on the athlete’s age group.

Which age group will my child be in?

Age groups are determined by the age of the athlete at 1 October.

Cross Country cost?

Registration fees for new athletes are $55.00. For athletes who have already been registered for the 2015/16 summer (track & field) season, there is no additional cost.


The 2016 Cross Country season consists of both normal weeks of competition together with a number of external events both regional as well as State Little Athletics and Athletics Victoria. Our weekly competition will also involve other clubs, such as Williamstown LAC and Werribee LAC.d

Please be aware, to compete at the State Cross Country Championships, athletes must compete at the Regional competition to be held on Saturday 25th June (venue to be confirmed).

How do I register my child?

All registrations must be made online via the Little Athletics Victoria website (www.lavic.com.au). Further information for new members on how to join or renew your registration, for athletes previously registered with Little Athletics prior to 2015/16) please email altona@lavic.com.au .

All new registrations must provide proof of age (i.e. birth certificate or passport).

Can my child try Cross Country before joining?

Yes, new families are allowed one (1) week trial period before having to commit to registering for the season.

What is expected of parents/guardians?

All parents/guardians are expected to assist with cross country operations from time to time. Duties include being a course marshal, timekeeping, and recording.

Do children need to wear a uniform?

No, specific competition uniform is required, but centre uniform will be provided for competition at all regional and state events.

Footwear is compulsory for all athletes in all events, but please note that no spike shoes are allowed.
